Cannabis & the anxiety economy

Anxiety is the most common mental illness in the US. Studies suggest cannabis contains anti-anxiety properties. Report suggest US CBD market will be worth $22 billion by 2022.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America and the National Institute of Mental Health, anxiety affects 18.1 percent of Americans each year and nearly one-third of Americans over their lifetimes and the issue is getting worse.

Vox highlights the rise of the anxiety economy.

“There are plenty of places to point fingers: your phone, the president, climate change, the recession, FOMO, divorce, social media, student debt, terrorism, the 24-hour news cycle, the economy, “the economy,” living farther from family, toxins in your gut, too many choices, too little sleep, too little sex.”

Anxious people are turning to devices to distract themselves; fidget spinners, weighted blankets, meditation apps – it doesn’t take long to find an anxiety inducing list of products to help relieve you of your anxiety (and cash). A search on Amazon for “anxiety relief” brings up over 20,000 results.

These are not cures just band-aids acting as a temporary distraction.

Cannabis and anxiety relief

Investor Howard Lindzon makes a critical link in this article. He discusses the rise of the anxiety economy and the anxiety inducing rollercoaster ride of cannabis stocks. If he’d taken this one step beyond he’d have discovered that cannabis actually relieves anxiety.

I’d suffered anxiety since my mid teens. It had been so long it became a normal state of being. Around 5 years ago I had my first drop of CBD oil. The permanent butterflies I was experiencing in my stomach stopped instantly. I started to sleep better, which in turn helped me deal with the elements of my life that contributed to my anxiety levels. I’m far from the only person who overcame anxiety with CBD.

“A 2015 analysis of past studies published in the journal Neurotherapeutics concluded CBD oil is an effective treatment for various mental health conditions, including social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and generalised anxiety disorder.”

According to research, CBD has calming, anti-anxiety and anti-psychotic effects. It also provides a longer sleep time and helps those suffering from insomnia.

The DEA recently moved a CBD based FDA approved drug from schedule 1 to 5 and Rolling Stone reports CBD market will reach $22 billion by 2022. Even Coca-cola is considering CBD infused soft drinks.

Humans are not the only life forms to benefit from CBD – you can also treat your anxious pets.

CBD is only part of the rapidly increasing cannabis economy predicted to exceed €115 Billion by 2028 in Europe alone.
